Crudeness has always enjoyed an undeserved reputation for courage. It presents itself as a form of honesty unburdened by social cowardice, a willingness to say what others allegedly lack the strength to articulate. It frames itself as clarity, as authenticity, as the natural enemy of pretence. In a cultural environment saturated with euphemism, deflection, and carefully curated civility, there is something initially appealing about this posture. It promises relief from performance. It offers the seductive assurance that one is encountering something real.
