Order Precedes Freedom

Order has never enjoyed good publicity. It does not inspire slogans, nor does it lend itself to grand declarations. It is, by its nature, unglamorous more filing cabinet than fireworks. And yet, much like a well-run court or a properly indexed library, its quiet efficiency is precisely what allows everything else to function. Law school, if nothing else, disabuses one of the notion that freedom thrives in chaos. Quite the opposite: it reveals, often with little patience for romanticism, that order is the condition that makes freedom possible.
